Volunteers can also contribute to other needs of slum population as shown below:

  1. Slum houses are congested, on average 5 members live in 1-2 room (typically of 12×12 feet) house. Interior design can be developed for efficient and healthy life, e.g. a) Better aeration of kitchen since many of them are using wood stove, b) Designing the foldable and convertible furniture, c) Better natural lighting and aeration of home, d) Affordable solutions for leaking roof in rainy season, e) Cheaper model for toilet, f) Convenient facility to tie mosquito net inside the congested room.
  2. Most of the male members are self-employed as driver (Auto Rickshaw, tempo, Cycle Rickshaw, etc), artisan (coloring, masonry, plumbing, electrician, welder, etc), labor job, security, street vendors, etc. The females are employed as housemaid to clean houses and in cooking, You can help them to develop practical and affordable safety measures, e.g. a) Efficient Lari or Cycle Rickshaw, b) Efficient Sweeping, mopping and cooking to prevent development of early disabling knee arthritis or low back pain, c) Developing affordable safety measures related to their occupation e.g. chemicals exposure in coloring, heavy weight lifting by males and females in construction, carpentry, electrical, welding, etc.
  3. Counseling for common behavioral issues: a) Irregularity in school or job, b) Home violence, (verbal and physical) mainly by alcoholic husband to wife and children, etc, c) Alcohol and tobacco chewing addictions, d) Better economic management e.g. purchasing grocery in bulk instead for daily use, regularly cooking at home, reducing excessive expenses in social customs, e) Blind faiths in Bhuva (local healers) for health issues, f) Eating of junk food, e.g. Pani-Puri, bakery items, Chinese, Samosa, Bhungara, Wafers, etc. Provide alternate healthy diet. g) Limit TV watching by students and teach them to watch quality/ educational programs, h) Counsel for preventive health measures, e.g. regularity in eating and sleeping, wearing Champal, brushing teeth two times a day, preventing early marriage especially in females, using mosquito nets, menstrual hygiene, etc.
